5.0 out of 5 stars Great eco drive chronograph from Citizen, December 5, 2010
By

This review is from: Citizen Men's CA0020-05E Eco Drive Strap Watch (Watch)
This is a very classy watch that goes equally well with a buttoned down oxford shirt or a golf shirt. The Black dial with three textured sub-dials and white markings is complemented by the black leather strap with white stitching. Because the case is titanium the watch is surprisingly light. Also I like the fact that the crystal is sapphire instead of mineral glass giving it added scratch protection. The date window is very readable and the 24 hour (am/pm) sub-dial is a nice touch. I used the chronograph feature to do incremental timing of higher speed bursts during my workout runs and it was very easy to use and the button were very intuitive. And the best feature of this watch is the eco-drive technology, basically it never needs a new battery. Finally I like the fact that Citizen company only builds serious watches, unlike most other retail watch brands whose makers also make sunglasses, pocket knifes, t-shirts etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great watch at a great price, March 31, 2011
This review is from: Citizen Men's CA0020-05E Eco Drive Strap Watch (Watch)

I had been looking for a new watch and wanted a sport/chronograph that still looked nice with a suit. I narrowed down my choice to this one and a Hamilton that was very similar. The Hamilton was $500 and at the end of the day, although it was Swiss made, I couldn't justify the $200 price difference. The Hamilton was a quartz model and the Eco-drive never needs a battery. I have 8 watches and my wife laughs at me for seemingly always having one that needs a new battery. Also, the sapphire crystal face and titanium case sealed the deal. The watch is light, with a virtually scratch proof face and looks great. It is also water resistant to 100 M, which was 50 more than the Hamilton. Also tipping me to the Citizen was my 19 yr old Citizen dive watch that still works beautifully and that I still wear all the time for any pool or beach outing in the summer. Proven Citizen quality made me a return customer. You won't be sorry with this watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Looking Watch, March 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Citizen Men's CA0020-05E Eco Drive Strap Watch (Watch)
Bought this watch as a gift for my husband. I wanted to give him a watch in which he doesn't have to constantly change the battery. This watch is nice and practical looking that he can wear it for formal occasions or to work. Also my husband says it's very light on his arm and doesn't pull his arm hair. Overall he really liked it.

The Quantum Thief

Product Description

Jean le Flambeur is a post-human criminal, mind burglar, confidence artist, and trickster. His origins are shrouded in mystery, but his exploits are known throughout the Heterarchy— from breaking into the vast Zeusbrains of the Inner System to stealing rare Earth antiques from the aristocrats of Mars. Now he’s confined inside the Dilemma Prison, where every day he has to get up and kill himself before his other self can kill him.

Rescued by the mysterious Mieli and her flirtatious spacecraft, Jean is taken to the Oubliette, the Moving City of Mars, where time is currency, memories are treasures, and a moon-turnedsingularity lights the night. What Mieli offers is the chance to win back his freedom and the powers of his old self—in exchange for finishing the one heist he never quite managed.

As Jean undertakes a series of capers on behalf of Mieli and her mysterious masters, elsewhere in the Oubliette investigator Isidore Beautrelet is called in to investigate the murder of a chocolatier, and finds himself on the trail of an arch-criminal, a man named le Flambeur….

The Quantum Thief is a crazy joyride through the solar system several centuries hence, a world of marching cities, ubiquitous public-key encryption, people communicating by sharing memories, and a race of hyper-advanced humans who originated as MMORPG guild members. But for all its wonders, it is also a story powered by very human motives of betrayal, revenge, and jealousy. It is a stunning debut.

3.0 out of 5 stars Clever (if challenging) hard SF, December 27, 2010
    By
This review is from: The Quantum Thief (Kindle Edition)
The Quantum Thief by Hannu Rajaniemi is one of this year's most celebrated debuts - a complex science fiction mystery set on a far-future Mars. Part crime, part espionage, part action thriller and all jam-packed with imaginative technology, The Quantum Thief is a daring and intricately-constructed adventure.

The plot follows, mostly, the thief Jean le Flambeur. Jean is freed from his infinite, game-theory -riddled space prison by Mieli a winged-cyber-ninja. Mieli is on a mission and needs Jean's help. Unfortunately, Jean is only a mere shadow of his former self. Before he can help out Mieli and steal something, he needs to sort himself out. His foxy robo-angel reluctantly in tow, Jean heads to Mars to find fragments of his own memory.

Meanwhile, Mars is a proper SF wonderland, with more shiny baubles than a Christmas tree. Martians (such as they are, being human) live on time - bought, borrowed or earned. When they're out of time, they go Quiet, and are put... Read more

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program ( What's this?)
Posthuman acolyte Mieli springs notorious thief Jean le Flambeur from prison to complete a job with shifting goals and faceless enemies. But detective Isidore Beautrelet knows Jean's coming, and has every tool in his arsenal ready. If only the two of them knew how much they need each other, perhaps both could drop the shackles of life in Mars's moving city, the Oubliette, and recognize the truth daily life conceals.

Debut author Hannu Rajaniemi blends science fiction with Russian and French literature, Hebrew myth, and modern game theory to create a dreamscape that tests its characters (and readers) through constant frustration. The cityscape in which the characters fight shifts as fast as their goals and alliances. And their principal coin of exchange is deception, so every action rests on a foundation of half-truths and chicanery.

The story runs on questions of identity. If I can erase my past, who am I? Does life mean very much if death is only... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Way over hyped debut, February 12, 2011

I will call a spade a spade and tell you this is overhyped rubbish. I read a lot of sci-fi and saw much gushing and praise about this debut on the sci-fi blogs. So let me describe to you what this book is...... imagine Morgan or Gibson at their most futuristic craziest, writing a bugs bunny cartoon, while everybody is on acid. You think I am joking? Think again.

Hannu Rajaniemi is kind of like Sheldon Cooper from the Big Bang Theory tv show. Apparently in real life he was a quantum physicist or something like that, and he displays all the storytelling and thinking skills of the fictional Sheldon Cooper.

It's all about being very clever, very intelligent, dazzling concepts one after the other, with complex language. It is not hard science, but more like a cartoon in an alternate fantasy reality. This is not grounded at all. There is a complete lack of any story or coherence or even interest in what is going on with the characters.

    After reading... Read more

I love this watch! It's simple and clean. If you are looking for a nice all around wear everyday watch than this is the one. I own several watches and this is the one that I go to on a consistent basis. It's not too big or small. I think it's the perfect size. If you are looking for a nice aviation style classic watch and don't want to break the bank then buy this. I had my eye on some Hamilton's, Aristo's and Junker's but they were out of my price range. I settled on this citizen and I am happy that I did. I didn't have to shell out a lot of cash to buy a classic looking watch. And it works great. No batteries needed. It's a great deal. I'm very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend this to anyone.

If you are looking for a watch that you can read at night this is not the one to get. It's the only reason why I am not giving it 5 stars. The hands glow but that's it and it's a weak glo. I think citizen would have been better off leaving this... Read more

I bought this watch a month ego and i like it very much,
it looks very impressive and elegant, the style is a combination of classic look with a modern look, because the watch is big and you have a small watch for the seconds it looks more modern,it is suitable with a suit and sports cloths as well.
The craftsmanship is excellent and for this price it is really worth it.
if i would have lost it i will probably buy a new one.

    Buy this watch if:
    - accuracy is important (mine has not lost or gained in five days),
    - you don't want to wear glasses to tell time,
    - battery changes are a bother,
    - you don't want to worry about getting your watch wet,

This watch is NOT for you if:
    - you are of very slender build and you want something proportional,
    - it's important to read date at a glance
